Join our volunteers

Your local library offers a variety of events and activities for people within your community, as well as providing access to a wealth of resources and information.

Every library in Devon is run by paid library staff, but there are lots of volunteering opportunities for people that wish to get involved and support their local library.

How to become a volunteer

If you are interested in volunteering in your local library, you can download the Expression of Interest form here. All volunteers will go through an interview process and successful candidates will be asked to supply details of referees.

Volunteers for some roles are subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Libraries Unlimited will provide any training or inductions necessary.

Our volunteering roles include opportunities to:

Help children

There’s always a lot going on at Devon Libraries for children and young people, from Bounce and Rhyme and story time, to Code Club and Book Track.

We often need volunteers to help out in the children’s library, supporting them to get ahead with their reading or to help out at events. We are working with Code Club to inspire children to get creative with computing, and are actively seeking volunteers with expertise in coding/programming to help run Code Clubs in libraries.

Please note, not all volunteering opportunities listed above are available in every Devon library. Please contact your local library to discuss the roles available.

Home Library Service Volunteers

Devon Libraries works in partnership with the Royal Voluntary Service to manage the Home Library Service. The Home Library Service delivers library books and audiobooks to people who, through ill health, injury or disability, cannot visit a library or are too frail to carry heavy books.
