Free books for every child
Bookstart is a national programme coordinated by the charity BookTrust. The programme is designed to support you to enjoy books with your child from an early age and to foster a love of reading. It's never too early to start a child on their reading journey and get them into the rewarding habit of reading every day.
There are two different Bookstart packs that your child will receive:
- You'll get your free Bookstart Baby pack from the Registrar when you register the birth of your newborn baby. In this pack you will receive a library membership card for your baby that can be activated on your child’s first visit to the library
- Your three-year-old child will receive their Bookstart Treasure Gift from their nursery, pre-school or other early years setting during the year they turn three
If you haven’t received either of the packs, they can be delivered to the library for you to collect. Please contact your local library.
- There are also Bookstart Packs available for children aged 4 and under with additional needs. Children with a hearing impairment or visual impairment can receive an additional free pack to support their individual need - ask at your local library.
- English not your first language? There are dual language books available in some languages too
Finding the right book for your child can sometimes be difficult. Our library staff will be able to help you find some wonderful board books or picture books appropriate to the age and interests of your child. You can also get some great ideas and recommendations using the Bookstart book finder.
